Apply for the Spark Program
The Spark Program is a seven-week course that offers select students the opportunity to learn about fellowship opportunities and provides them with the tools to develop a competitive profile. The program is modelled after the program developed at University of Buffalo.
Faculty are encouraged to recommend students and specify in the comments that the recommendation is for Spark.
About the Program
- The Spark Program is held in the spring for first-year students and in the fall for sophomores.
- Students must commit to participating in the entire series of workshops and meet individually with Dr. Ting as part of the program. Students will subsequently be encouraged to complete an application for a summer program or research opportunity.
- Students must submit an online application to be considered for the program.
- Selected students should have a GPA of 3.3 or higher and have already made a positive impression on faculty and staff.
The opportunities that are discussed do not cover the expenses of medical, dental or pharmacy school. Therefore, the Spark Program is not the best fit for students who plan on pursuing these career paths. In addition, all of the fellowship opportunities in the program are available to U.S. citizens only.
What to Expect
The program meets over the course of seven weeks for dinner and introduces students to opportunities at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Throughout the program participants are introduced to students and faculty who have applied for, and earned prestigious awards. It is designed to give students the opportunity to assess their strengths, develop their critical thinking and technical writing, envision their future, and create a plan to help them along their envisioned path and become a competitive candidate for major fellowships.
