Astronaut Scholarship Foundation
The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation is seeking nominations for its $10,000 scholarship for an outstanding Penn State engineering, math or natural or applied sciences major. Students nominated for Astronaut Scholarships should exhibit motivation, imagination, and exceptional performance in the science or engineering field of their major and should be intellectually daring in order to join the ranks of the elite Astronaut Scholars.
Office Application Deadline: March 1, 2019 by 12:00 pm EST
- U.S citizen
- Full-time sophomore or junior (1-2 years of study remaining after applying)
- Completed at least 2 years of full-time study at Penn State by the fall semester following your application
- Majoring in a STEM field

The university is allowed to nominate up to two applicants, so there is an internal selection process.
To be considered for nomination, applicants must submit the following materials to the office by the date above via email (firstname.lastname@example.org).
- Personal research statement (guidance below)
- Resume or academic CV
- Unofficial transcript
- Two letters of recommendation (at least one from a Penn State faculty member)
- Letters should come directly from your references and can be emailed so long as they are on letterhead and have a signature
The personal statement should not exceed 1,000 words. It is an opportunity for you to introduce yourself and demonstrate how you stand out from other undergraduate researchers at your university. The statement should include examples of your involvement and commitment to your studies beyond the formal classroom setting. Examples should also connect to your interest in impacting the world where applicable. Overall, the statement should connect your life experiences, personal goals, and/or your accumulated learning into one cohesive narrative.
Your application will be evaluated for your display of creativity, ability to drive research and develop new ideas, exhibition of motivation and imagination in your field, conveyance of intellectual daring and desire to positively change the world, and leadership on campus or in the community.
Applicants will be notified within one to two weeks with whether they've been nominated or not. Nominees will have a chance to revise their materials, if necessary, prior to final submission.
