DAAD Graduate Study/Research Scholarship

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) funds and supports the international exchange of highly qualified graduating seniors, recent graduates, and graduate students from all disciplines to complete an independent study or a full Master’s degree in Germany.


  • Senior or beyond
    • Current graduate students must be enrolled full-time
      • Non-U.S. and non-Canadian citizens need one year of enrollment at time of application
    • Alumni must be within 6 years of receiving their most recent degree when they apply
    • Ph.D. applicants who are ABD must apply no more than three years after receiving ABD status
    • Post-Docs should have completed their degrees no more than two years before applying

Office Application Deadline: October 7, 2019

This deadline is required for the internal nomination process conducted by the Fellowships Office. DAAD does offer other scholarships that do not require this nomination process. Applications for those scholarships may be submitted directly to DAAD and have various due dates throughout the year. Application Process: The university is allowed to nominate one priority applicant, so there is an internal nomination process. All applicants will still be sent forward to DAAD for consideration in the general applicant pool. Applications are submitted through DAAD's application portal. To be considered for nomination applicants must submit a copy of their completed application as generated in DAAD's application portal after submission directly to our office via email or hardcopy ( or 321 Boucke Bldg.) by the date above. A completed application includes the following materials:

  • Application form
  • Supplemental materials (for music, fine arts, dance only)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Research/Study proposal
  • Official transcript(s)
  • DAAD language evaluation form
  • For research applicants, letter confirming supervision by an academic adviser in Germany
  • One reference form from a Penn State senior academic/professor in your field of study
